Elapsed Time Worksheets for Grade 4 — Hours and Minutes

In Grade 4 reading the clock is not enough: children work out how much time passes. These sheets offer three exercises: find the duration between a start time and an end time, find the end time from a start and a duration, and convert hours and minutes to minutes and back. Times are in 24-hour notation (15:45) to the quarter hour, with durations up to 3 h 45, and nothing crosses midnight. The answers are printed at the bottom of the page.

Why use this worksheet?

Work out a duration

From 12:15 to 13:45: how much time has passed? The child handles the change from one hour to the next.

Find the end time

7:00 + 45 min, or 16:00 + 3 h: the child adds a duration to a start time, carrying over the minutes.

Convert

Hours and minutes to minutes (2 h 15 min = 135 min), then minutes to hours and minutes (75 min = 1 h 15 min).

Answers included

Each exercise is labelled (A, B, C) and the full answer key is printed at the bottom of the sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Why 24-hour times and not clock faces?

Because a duration is worked out from the written time: 15:45, 18:00. Analog clocks are practised from Grade 1 to Grade 3 in the same generator.

What is the hard part of these exercises?

Crossing the hour: from 15:45 to 18:00 the child has to split the calculation (15 minutes to 16:00, then 2 hours). The Grade 4 sheets stay on quarter hours to focus on that step.

Do the durations cross midnight?

No: every start and end time stays within the same day, to avoid an extra difficulty.

Which sheet includes seconds?

Conversions with seconds (3 min 20 s = 200 s) are in the Grade 5 sheets.

Can I customize this worksheet with a different theme?

Yes. Beyond the educational content, you can choose from 10 themes (space, ocean, unicorn, superhero…) that change the color palette of the worksheet to make it more appealing to your child.
