Number Tracing
Number tracing worksheets for kindergarten and grade 1. Digits 0–9 with counting dots, guided boxes. Free A4 PDF, no sign-up.
Learning to write numbers: a key step
Writing the digits 0 to 9 sounds trivial, but it's a skill that resists longer than expected. Plenty of first-graders can recognize a 5 but write it backwards, or start the stroke in the wrong spot. A poorly formed digit isn't just ugly — it slows down all column arithmetic later, because the child can't reliably read their own work. These tracing sheets with arrow-guided stroke order help lock in the right gesture from kindergarten through Grade 1. A gesture learned right, early, automates in a few weeks and stays put.

How to use number tracing sheets
- 1
Pick the digits to practice: the full 0-9 set, or just the tricky ones (4, 5, and 8 are the hardest).
- 2
Choose the format: dotted tracing, model next to a blank space, or empty line once the gesture is mastered.
- 3
Print the A4 PDF and have the child trace over the dots, strictly following the arrow order — that's what burns the gesture into motor memory.
- 4
Have them say each digit out loud as they write: "the 2 — I start top-left, curve over, come down, draw the base."
Tips for forming digits correctly
Respect the official stroke order: the 4 takes two movements (diagonal down, horizontal bar, vertical down), the 5 starts with the top horizontal bar. A child who invents their own stroke order will automate it, and then it's very hard to correct. Practice 3 digits per session, never all 10 at once. Curved digits (0, 3, 6, 8, 9) are harder than straight-line digits (1, 4, 7) — start with the easy ones. If the child writes a mirrored digit, don't scold: it's a normal stage until age 6. Just show the correct direction by guiding their hand for 2-3 strokes.
