What a 5-6 year old works on
At 5-6, kids master uppercase print and discover lowercase. They develop phonological awareness (breaking words into syllables, identifying sounds), recognize a few sight words, write their name from memory, count and write to 30, order numbers, and solve simple problems. This is also the year of temporal (days, months, seasons) and spatial (left/right, maps) orientation.
Parent tips for Kindergarten
Pivotal year before Grade 1: your child must ARRIVE at Grade 1 knowing their name, the alphabet (at least letter recognition), syllable segmentation, and counting to 30. 10-15 minutes a day on these fundamentals makes a huge difference at back-to-school time. Don't force reading, but prepare the ground with phonics and syllables.
