Place Value Worksheets for Grade 4 — Numbers up to 999,999

In Grade 4 numbers grow past the thousands: children read, write, compare and order five- and six-digit numbers. These worksheets generate numbers up to 999,999, printed in groups of three digits (305 040), with an inner zero in about one number in three, the classic trap. You can choose four kinds of exercises: write in words, compare, decompose place by place (hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) and put in increasing order.

Why use this worksheet?

Up to 999,999

Five- and six-digit numbers drawn at random every time, with inner zeros (305 040, 70 027) to practise the hard cases.

Decompose place by place

One box per digit: hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. The child has to name every position.

Close comparisons

The two numbers to compare have the same number of digits and start with the same digit, so the child has to read the places one by one.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the numbers printed in groups of three digits?

Because reading follows those groups: 305 040 is read “three hundred five thousand forty”. The sheets put a space between the groups so the numbers are easy to read, and children get used to writing them the same way.

My child gets confused whenever there is a zero in the number. How can I help?

Have them place each digit in a place-value chart and say the empty place aloud: “zero ten thousands”. About one number in three on these sheets has an inner zero, so there is regular practice.

Can I choose which exercises are on the sheet?

Yes. Write in words, compare, decompose and order can be ticked separately, with 4, 6 or 8 exercises per sheet. One click gives a new set of numbers.

Does the sheet include all the answers?

No: only the answers to the comparisons are printed. For writing in words, decomposing and ordering, check with your child by having them read the number aloud.

Can I customize this worksheet with a different theme?

Yes. Beyond the educational content, you can choose from 10 themes (space, ocean, unicorn, superhero…) that change the color palette of the worksheet to make it more appealing to your child.

Do I need an account to download this worksheet?
