Frequently asked questions
When is place value introduced?
Grade 1: tens and ones (up to 100). Grade 2: hundreds (up to 1000). Grade 3: thousands and expanded form.
Why is place value hard?
Children learn to count before they understand grouping. "Twenty-three" doesn't sound like "two tens and three ones". Concrete base-10 blocks bridge this gap.
What is expanded form?
342 = 3 hundreds + 4 tens + 2 ones = 300 + 40 + 2. Writing numbers in expanded form shows that place value is just a system of grouping.
How does place value support written addition?
Carrying in column addition is physically moving a group of 10 ones into the tens column. Children who understand place value carry correctly without memorising a procedure.
