Tips for using this worksheet
Build the sum with blocks first
Before your child writes a sum in columns, have them build it with tens rods and ones cubes, or with matchsticks tied into bundles of ten. A child who has seen the borrowing happen does not follow a rule learned by heart.
Colour the columns
Colour the ones column blue and the tens column red, and write the carried digit in the colour of the column it moves to. That way no digit drifts into the wrong column.
Estimate the answer first
Before calculating, your child estimates: 48 + 37 is close to 50 + 40, so about 90. If the answer is far from that, a mistake has crept in.
What next?
Practise one operation at a time until the columns stay tidy without help: addition with carrying first, then subtraction, and finally multiplication by a single digit. A few problems per session beat a full page, and every answer can be checked with the inverse operation.

Why do children make alignment errors?
Units must align under units, tens under tens. Pre-drawn column grids on worksheets prevent this. Graph paper is a good alternative at home.

Mental strategies (partitioning, rounding) should come first for small numbers. Column method for numbers too large to hold mentally.
How to explain borrowing?
"I borrow 10 from the tens column, making it 10 ones." Concrete base-10 blocks make this visible before using abstract notation.
