Pre-Writing Patterns Worksheets — Kindergarten (Ages 5–6)

In kindergarten, pre-writing patterns get ready for real handwriting. This sheet has the 8 base patterns (vertical and horizontal lines, zigzags, waves, loops, circles, arches, cups) plus three reserved for the Kindergarten level: the spiral, the double wave and the trellis. The model is repeated five times on a line that is lower than at Pre-K, and the child continues it on the baseline.

Why use this worksheet?

11 patterns, 3 only at this level

Spiral, double wave and trellis join the 8 patterns of the earlier levels. They are marked with a star in the generator.

Lower lines than at Pre-K

Lines are 55 points high (65 at Pre-K ages 4–5, 80 at ages 3–4) and the model is repeated five times, against four and three.

Model, then a line to fill

The model pattern is on the left; on the right, a baseline where the child reproduces the pattern across the width.

1 or 2 lines per pattern

About 10 lines per page: with all 11 patterns the sheet has 2 pages. Name and theme of your choice, A4 PDF, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from the Pre-K sheet?

Lines are lower (55 points instead of 65), the model is repeated five times instead of four, and three patterns are added: spiral, double wave and trellis. The 8 base patterns are still available.

Do children have to do every pattern?

No. Tick the patterns to practise: if your child already manages lines and circles, focus the sheet on loops, arches and the new kindergarten patterns.

In what order should the patterns be offered?

A common approach is to begin with the simplest movements (lines, circles), then curves (waves, arches, cups) and finally the more complex patterns (loops, spiral, trellis). Adapt it to what your child manages.

What comes after pre-writing?

When loops and arches are steady, the alphabet tracing sheet takes over, with four guide lines.

Can I customize this worksheet with a different theme?

Yes. Beyond the educational content, you can choose from 10 themes (space, ocean, unicorn, superhero…) that change the color palette of the worksheet to make it more appealing to your child.
