Comparing Groups Worksheets — Pre-K (Ages 4–5)

Saying which group has more is not just a matter of counting: a child can also compare by pairing one object from each group. These sheets show two groups of circles, stars or squares, with 1 to 10 objects each, never equal, lined up in rows of 5. One instruction at the top of the page: “Circle the group that has more.” The child ticks the circle next to the chosen group.

Why use this worksheet?

Two groups, never equal

In every box the two groups have a different number of objects, so there is always a right answer.

From 1 to 10

Each group holds between 1 and 10 objects, lined up in rows of 5 so children can count in fives or compare row by row.

Same-size shapes

Within a box the objects of both groups are the same size: the child compares quantities, not areas.

Frequently asked questions

How can a child compare without counting?

By pairing: cross out one object from each group, then another, until one group has none left. The group with objects remaining has more. Show this with real objects before the sheet.

Can the two groups be equal?

No: the two groups always have a different number of objects, so “Circle the group that has more” always has an answer.

What if my child gets it wrong?

Redo the comparison with real objects: lay out two piles, pair them one by one, then go back to the sheet. Avoid giving the answer: the method is what matters.

What about kindergarten?

The kindergarten sheet uses groups of 1 to 20 with the same instruction. The same tool also offers counting and splitting numbers.

Can I customize this worksheet with a different theme?

Yes. Beyond the educational content, you can choose from 10 themes (space, ocean, unicorn, superhero…) that change the color palette of the worksheet to make it more appealing to your child.
