In Grade 5 mental math extends to decimal numbers. Tenths and hundredths
Adding and subtracting tenths, multiplying a decimal by 10 or 100: the decimal point “moves”. At least one real decimal per calculation.
Whole numbers to 2,000
Addition and subtraction on a bigger scale than Grade 4, with gaps that make children break the numbers up.

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from the Grade 4 sheet?
Grade 4 stays with whole numbers up to 1,000. Grade 5 goes to 2,000 and brings in tenths, hundredths and multiplication by 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5.
How do I multiply 3.4 by 10 in my head?
Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left: 3.4 becomes 34. By 100 the shift is two places: 3.4 becomes 340. That is what the sheets practise.
Can the results be decimals?
Yes, for example 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12 or 3.4 + 5.8 = 9.2. At least one number is a decimal in the additions and subtractions of tenths.
Are the answers on the sheet?
No, the student sheet does not show the answers. You can check with a calculator or redo the calculations together.
