Frequently asked questions
When is each tense introduced?
Present tense: Grade 1-2. Passé composé: Grade 3. Imperfect: Grade 4. Future simple: Grade 4-5.
Why do children confuse present and passé composé?
The passé composé requires choosing the right auxiliary (avoir or être) AND the past participle. Regular patterns (mangé, fini) vs irregular ones (fait, été, eu) — irregular verbs need to be memorised.
How to automate conjugation?
5 minutes of oral conjugation each evening: "je mange, tu manges, il mange..." without written support first. Oral automatisation comes before correct written production.
Do worksheets cover irregular verbs?
Être and avoir are included throughout. The main irregulars (aller, faire, prendre, venir) are offered from Grade 4-5.
