Frequently asked questions
When are fractions introduced in school?
Fractions are formally introduced in Grade 4 in most curricula (US Common Core, UK Year 4, French CM1). Intuitive exposure (half, quarter) starts earlier in Grades 1-2.
Why does 1/4 seem bigger than 1/2 to kids?
Because 4 > 2. The key insight is that a bigger denominator means smaller pieces. Use a pizza or chocolate bar cut into 4 vs 2 pieces to make it concrete before abstract practice.
How do you compare fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator: 2/3 = 10/15 and 3/5 = 9/15, so 2/3 > 3/5. In Grade 5, cross-multiplication is also introduced as a faster method.
Should fractions be mastered before Grade 5 algebra?
Yes โ fractions are the foundation for decimals, ratios, percentages, and algebra. A shaky fraction foundation is the most common source of middle-school math struggles.
